After finishing Miles Morales, instead of jumping straight into Spider Man 2, I started playing the DLC, city that never sleeps for the OG spider man game that I had skipped before starting Miles Morales.
This was originally released as DLC to the Spider Man game of 2018 and is included in the remastered edition. It has three parts, The Heist, Turf Wars and Silver Lining. The events of the DLC story is set 3 months after the Devil's Breath crisis and follows crime activities led by mob boss Hammerhead.
Since I was playing through Miles Morales on my PS5, instead of jumping back to my PC, what I did was to start a new game of the OG game and play till the main mission Something Old, Something New after which we can skip directly into the DLC by selecting it from the DLC menu. Everything is the same game under the hood, just a new story which acts as an epilogue and some new side missions are available in the DLC.
The OG DLC was actually released monthly as three parts from October to December 2018. It was bundled with the remastered version later.
It is also interesting to note that spider man co-creator Stan Lee passed away just before the release of the part 2 of the DLC. So the end of the DLC features a dedication to him at the end of it.
Gameplay
The gameplay is exactly the same as the base Spider Man game. The gameplay takes place separate from the main story in a separate instance of New York city accessed through the DLC section of the menu. All crimes, side missions, etc are completely separate for each DLC chapter. In the DLC, random crimes are committed by Magia. In chapter 2 and 3, Magia have access to Sable technology and is like fighting pumped up street criminals. So there are new enemy types in the DLC which adds to its difficulty. I found it more difficult to deal with as I had started a new game just for the DLC and did not have access to the same skills that someone who played the base game and then started the DLC already have access to.
There is a lot of side quests in the game involving Screwball. While we only had one Screwball side mission in the base game, in the DLC Screwball takes over the role of Taskmaster and gives us a lot of challenges in each chapter like we did in the case of taskmaster. Speaking of side missions chapter 3 featured an interesting side mission related to captain Yuri.
Characters
We see MJ playing the role kind of like Ganke in Miles Morales in this game. We also see characters like captain Yuri who is also in the base game also making appearance in this game.
City that never sleeps have some new characters. Key figures include the Black Cat, who the first chapter of the DLC, The Heist revolves around. In the main game she only had a voice only role. We have the mob boss Hammerhead. Who steals Sable technology and draws the attention of Silver Sable who we will play with in the chapter 3 Silver Lining.
My Experience
The DLC felt just like what Insomniac first described Miles Morales to be before it was separated out and made as it's own game, an expansion to the base spider man game with all its goodness but a fresh story and more action.
It was good to see Black Cat and her storyline play out in The Heist, Peter's struggles with her and the role of The Heist in setting up for the next two chapters.
Turf wars hit hard because we see some changes in captain Yuri, it portrays her struggles and changing dynamics between her and spider man.
Silver Lining was a perfect banger finisher that adds up all the good elements that were set up in the previous chapters. We see the return of Silver Sable and how spidy struggles with working with her. There is also a side quest dedicated to captain Yuri that shows a dark side of her. I bet I will see more on that on Spider Man 2.
After playing a couple of Screwball missions and new bases however, I think some of these side missions were a bit repetitive when compared to the ones we played in the base game. It's not too much of a hassle but was bit noticeable when you spend an hour just struggling with photo bombs while fighting a bunch of enemies.
All three DLCs also features 3 new costumes for spidy each. I had fun alternating between each of them during my playthrough.
Conclusion
City that never sleeps was a proper expansion to the story. Story and characters were good and engaging. However I think most of the side quests and gameplay elements were noticeably repetitive after we have already completed the base game and more like filler content. So I do not regret that I took a break to play Miles Morales first before getting into this DLC. This clearly portrays why I usually never play DLCs in any games but when I absolutely have to for story reasons. If you ask me I will rate this a 7/10 but if it was not for the great storyline it would have went down to 6.
